Safety, the law, and event rules

  1. 1. We require you to be 18 or older and to know your local laws before you order. That applies to sharp or dull blades. Some countries might have restrictions on swords no matter the blade sharpness.
  2. 2. Conventions and similar events ban sharp swords almost exclusively. We always recommend checking the rules for an event before you pack, no matter what kind of sword you have.
  3. 3. Even dull blades can poke, break, or bruise if you swing it. We recommend treating all swords as the long pieces of steel they are.
  4. 4. A sharp blade needs a stand, locked storage, or scabbard/saya. Nobody should handle it recklessly or casually.

Parts of a Katana

A katana, steeped in tradition, is a samurai sword that's become emblematic of Japanese swords. Hailed for its razor-sharp edge and meticulously crafted blade, it's more than just a weapon—it's a work of art, a symbol of a warrior’s honor and resolve, and a testament to the master smith's skill.

The blade length varies, but you can typically expect a standard katana to measure between 60 and 80 cm.

The Blade

Each part of the blade, from the edge to the spine, has its own designated role. The back of the blade, also known as the "shinogi-zukuri," is designed to parry and block. The edge, meanwhile, is sharpened to a razor-like quality, enabling it to cut through bamboo, armor, and yes, even flesh. But remember, a katana isn't just for slicing and dicing; its curve adds a whole new dimension to its capabilities.

The Handle and Guard

Let's move from blade to handle, or as it's known in the sword world, the "tsuka." The tsuka isn't just a wooden stick wrapped in ray skin and cotton or silk; it's an extension of the blade and crucial for control. Within the handle lies the "nakago," a tang that's part of the blade, secured with a bamboo pin called a "mekugi." This is the sword's backbone, offering a firm grip and balance.

As for the guard, or "tsuba," it's not just decorative. It serves to protect your hand during combat. The tsuba can range from simple iron designs to elaborate works of art, often reflecting the craftsmanship and period in which the katana was made. Whether you're a collector or a martial artist, the handle and guard are not to be overlooked.

Why Katanas are Curved

Now, about that curve. Ever wonder why katanas are curved? The answer lies in their original design, which evolved to fit the needs of the samurai on horseback. A curved blade is easier to draw quickly, offering a more efficient cutting motion. Plus, the curve lends the katana its elegant, distinct shape. To add to that, the quenching process during forging helps enhance this natural curve.

Full Tang

Full-Tang - The blade extends seamlessly throughout the entire length of the handle, delivering exceptional stability and longevity, making it ideal for practical use.

Artisanal Craftsmanship - Employing time-honored techniques, each sword is painstakingly forged by hand, and each design pays tribute to the rich traditions, culture, and craftsmanship that make it a true work of art.

How to Clean a Katana

With proper care and regular sword maintenance, your katana can last indefinitely.

Preserving your sword involves more than just cleaning. Applying a light coat of oil to the blade can protect it from moisture and corrosion. The type of oil can vary—some people swear by traditional choji oil, while others prefer more readily available options like mineral oil. No matter what kind you use, remember to apply it sparingly and evenly. With proper cleaning and preservation, your sword will stay as striking as the day you bought it.

For those storing swords in a sheath, be aware that long-term storage in leather or wood can damage the blade due to moisture retention. Instead, consider wrapping the blade in a corrosion-resistant cloth. Finally, regardless of how you're storing your sword, it's good practice to inspect it regularly. Check for signs of rust, wear, or damage. With proper storage and regular checks, your sword will remain a showpiece for years to come.

KATANA SWORD FAQs

What is a katana sword and is it the same as a samurai sword?
A katana sword is a traditional Japanese sword characterized by its unique curvature, length, and sharp edge. It is also referred to as a samurai sword because it was typically carried by the samurai, the warrior class of feudal Japan. It carries years of history and is considered an absolute work of art.
What are the key characteristics and qualities that make a real katana?
A real katana is typically handmade using traditional methods and materials, representing a master craft that has passed through many eras. It has a distinctive curved blade, with an edge that can make a clean cut. Key features include an ornate guard and handle, as well as a unique blade pattern, often complemented by a bo-hi, a groove running the length of the blade to help balance and maintain the sword.
How are katana swords made and what techniques are used?
The process of creating a katana sword is a work of intricate detail, usually carried out by a master craftsman. The blade is forged from a high-quality material and then tempered for strength. This process can take years to master and is what gives the katana its edge and unique blade pattern.
What's the difference between a katana, a wakizashi and a tanto?
A katana, wakizashi, and tanto are all traditional Japanese swords, but they differ primarily in length. A katana is the longest, usually over 60cm, and was the samurai's primary weapon. The wakizashi is shorter, normally between 30 and 60cm, and was used as a secondary weapon. The tanto is the shortest, its blade is typically 15 to 30cm long, and was generally used for close combat.
How can I maintain and care for my katana sword?
Proper maintenance is key to preserving the quality of your katana sword. This typically includes regular cleaning and oiling to prevent rust and protect the surface of the blade, as well as ensuring a proper storage place to prevent damage.
Can I use my samurai sword for cutting?
Yes, many samurai swords, including the katana, are designed for cutting. Their sharp edge and balanced weight allow for precise and powerful cuts. However, one needs to be careful while doing so as they are extremely sharp and, if not used properly, can cause harm.
What is the difference between wakizashi and katana?
A wakizashi is another type of traditional Japanese sword that is shorter than the katana. Samurai often paired the two, using the wakizashi for close-quarter combats while the katana was more commonly used on the battlefield due to its longer blade length.
How does the handmade nature of a katana from Japan contribute to its reputation as a work of art?
The handmade aspect of katanas from Japan is a crucial factor in their status as not just weapons but also as collectible works of art. Each authentic katana is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, reflecting centuries of Japanese culture and tradition. This craftsmanship ensures that every piece is unique, often finding a place in the collections of enthusiasts who appreciate their historical and cultural significance. While originally designed for battle, these swords are now celebrated for their beauty and precision, making them a popular choice not only for practitioners of martial arts but also for those who study and celebrate the rich heritage of Japan.
